Out of the crate
Out of the crate was a photo study that took place at the Manchester art gallery, the subject was an exhibit of the same name a series of old sculptures that the Manchester art gallery had kept in storage. The aim of the project was to capture the sculpture and attempt to unravel and piece together any hidden stories they can tell. from a skill standpoint the project was intended to help me develop technical skills with the use of DSLR cameras, photo editing software (Photoshop) as well as framing and lighting techniques.
During this project the sculptures remined my of many different symbols and iconography used in the internet subculture of 'Vaporwave' a subculture that made usage of several different retro and old school imagery and blending them with surrealist imagery. the subculture combines, 80's mall culture and brand imagery, pastel colours and classical sculptures and VHS artifacting to create a strange sense of manufactured nostalgia. In my own work I attempted to recreate this style by taking the work I produced at the Manchester art gallery and apply a sort of VHS style film grain and retro style colour palette to some of my favourite photos of the bunch
